Norm's storytelling presence and rapport with children is immediate and sincere. Before becoming a full-time professional storyteller, Norm was an award-winning teacher. He enjoyed teaching kindergarten for nine years. One year he told a different story every day, that's 180 stories! He designed and administrated an after-school program where he taught intermediate students how to tell stories for performance that resulted in over 20 public performances. He has taught storytelling at Saturday Academy and taught Cub Scouts tall tales as well. Norm loves telling to children and has done so at bookstores, churches, parties, school assemblies & literacy nights, campfires, summer camps, and the Seattle Kite Festival.
Here's what people are saying about Norm:
"Energetic Norm Brecke has a great way with stories, and with kids!"
Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald
Folklorist, Author, and Storyteller
"When Norm comes to Island Books and tells stories the world stops, small children from 3 to 6 years old are captivated along with their parents and older siblings. His musical storytelling and use of dramatic voice always draws people in and takes them temporarily to another place. He calls it, family storytelling. We call it heaven for half an hour."
Nancy Page, Former owner
Island Books, Mercer Island, WA
"Norm is an awesome storyteller. He has an amazing ability to tailor his program to a variety of ages. I’ve had him tell stories to children ages 5-11 and he was able to keep them all engaged and actively participating. Norm not only tells stories, but jokes and anecdotes all accompanied by music. A rare find, a true keep!”
Gina Dexter ,Kid's Club Supervisor, Newport Children's School
"Norm Brecke has turned many a shy child into a story-telling pro as the Story Club coach at Kennydale Elementary School."
Monika Rustad, parent
"Norm Brecke is one heck of a story teller! Who else could captivate an audience of 4 to 94 year olds? He weaves a yarn that's colorful, well thought out, and paced to keep you on the edge of your seat, or giggling down to your belly."
Rebecca Gallagher, Author.
"With his blend of storytelling and music, Norm has become a favorite at Ravenna, Third Place Books. His music is delightful, adding an exciting and fun aspect to his stories. Children and parents come especially to hear him. 'Are we going to see the singing man today?' asked one boy. I highly recommend him."
